Pool Closure

Since opening the facility in February 2024, Mesabi Fit has been evaluating all areas of the building to determine what is required to maintain a safe, sustainable, and financially responsible community wellness center for the Iron Range.

As part of that process, the Mesabi Fit Board of Directors and leadership team have spent considerable time reviewing the condition of the aquatics facility. This included consulting with engineers and contractors and evaluating the significant costs required to repair and maintain the pool systems long term.

After careful review and more than a year of evaluation, the Board of Directors has made the difficult decision to permanently close the Mesabi Fit pool.

We recognize that the pool was an important part of the facility for many years under the former YMCA and for community members who continued to use it after Mesabi Fit assumed operations. For many individuals, it provided not only exercise, but also routine and connection with others.

Unfortunately, the condition of the pool infrastructure and the level of investment required to repair and operate it long-term are beyond what our nonprofit organization can responsibly sustain. Continuing to operate the pool would require substantial financial resources that would place strain on the organization and limit our ability to support other programs and services for the community.

As a nonprofit, our responsibility is to ensure the long-term stability of Mesabi Fit so we can continue serving the Iron Range for years to come. While this decision is difficult, it allows us to focus our resources on strengthening the rest of the facility and expanding opportunities that benefit the broader community.

We appreciate the community’s continued support of Mesabi Fit.
